Indian hockey team win gold at Incheon, qualify for Rio Olympics
A spirited Indian men's hockey team defeated arch-rivals and defending champions Pakistan 4-2 in a nerve-wracking shoot-out to end its 16-year gold medal draught in the Asian Games and earn a direct berth to the 2016 Rio Olympics, in Incheon on Thursday.
It turned out to be a humdinger of a contest between the two sub-continental foes as both India and Pakistan refused to give an inch to each other in the entire 60 minutes of a keenly contested tussle.
It took a shoot-out to determine the winner as both the teanm were locked 1-1 in the regulation time of the summit clash at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium.
Pakistan started brightly and broke the deadlock as early as the third minute of the match through Muhammad Rizwan Sr before Kothajit Singh (27th) equalised for India in the second quarter. The two teams continued their battle after change of ends but failed to breach the rival citadels inspite of creating numerous scoring chances, forcing the match into the shoot-off.
In the one-on-one shoot-off situation, Akashdeep Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, Birendra Lakra and Dhramvir Singh scored for India, while Manpreet Singh turned out to be the fall guy.
But all credit to Indian custodian and vice-captain P.R. Sreejesh, who produced breathtaking saves in the shoot-off to deny Pakistan's Abdul Haseem Khan and Muhammad Umar Butta.
Muhammad Waqas and Shafqat Rasool scored the goals for Pakistan.
By virtue of the coveted gold medal here, India have earned a direct qualification to Rio Olympics, while Pakistan will have to go through the qualifiers. The last time India won the gold medal was in the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.

INdependence
history :
“
Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif accepted on Saturday an invitation to attend the inauguration of Indian Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, a first between the nuclear-armed rivals that could help set the tone of engagement as the two leaders seek to improve troubled ties.
"There will be a bilateral meeting on the sidelines between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Mr. Modi," said Mohyuddin Wani, the joint secretary of the Pakistan Prime Minister's office.

Consumption data contradict high poverty estimates
India could be overstating poverty levels as the private final consumption estimates captured by the National Income Accounts (NIA) is nearly twice as much as the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) estimates for consumption expenditure of households in 2011-12.
At present, poverty ratios are calculated using the NSSO data. The C. Rangarajan Committee on poverty estimation, that will submit its findings by the month-end, is likely to report that it has so far not been able to reconcile the differential between the two sets of data, a Planning Commission source told The Hindu. Dr. Rangarajan could not be reached for comment as he was travelling.
The Planning Commission’s latest estimate of the national poverty line was at consumption expenditure level of Rs. 33.33 in cities and Rs. 27.20 in villages per day per person. Indians below this consumption poverty line fell dramatically from 41 crore in 2004-05 to 27 crore in 2011-12. The irreconcilable differential of the two data sets means even these estimates of poverty levels could be an overstatement.
“The exact extent of overstatement of poverty could not be calculated as there is no way to find out exactly who is under-reporting consumption,” the source said. “However, since it cannot be only the rich who are under-reporting consumption, it can be said that poverty is being overstated.”
The UPA had in May 2012 set up the five-member expert group to revisit the way poverty is estimated following criticism of the Planning Commission's estimates based on the Tendulkar panel norms. The Commission had announced that the number of poor stood reduced from 40.7 crore to 35.5 crore during the period 2004-05 to 2009-10.
A source in the Central Statistics Office explained the weaknesses of the NSS estimates.

Rare info
Iron working: Iron works were developed in the Vedic period of India, around the same time as, but independently of, Anatolia and the Caucasus. Archaeological sites in India, such as Malhar, Dadupur, Raja Nala Ka Tila and Lahuradewa in present day Uttar Pradesh show iron implements in the period between 1800 BCE—1200 BCE . Early iron objects found in India can be dated to 1400 BCE by employing the method of radiocarbon dating. Spikes, knives, daggers, arrow-heads, bowls, spoons, saucepans, axes, chisels, tongs, door fittings etc. ranging from 600 BCE to 200 BCE have been discovered from several archaeological sites of India. Some scholars believe that by the early 13th century BC, iron smelting was practiced on a bigger scale in India, suggesting that the date the technology's inception may be placed earlier. In Southern India (present day Mysore) iron appeared as early as 11th to 12th centuries BC; these developments were too early for any significant close contact with the northwest of the country. In the time of Chandragupta II Vikramaditya (375–413 CE), corrosion-resistant iron was used to erect the Iron pillar of Delhi, which has withstood corrosion for over 1,600 years.

live today : Missing Malaysia plane MH370 crashed in Indian Ocean, no hope of survivors says PM
The Malaysia Airlines flight that went missing March 8 with 239 people on board ended in the southern Indian Ocean and there is no hope of any survivors, Malaysian authorities announced today.
Addressing a press conference here Monday, Prime Minister Najib Razak said that British investigators from its Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have confirmed that the Malaysia Airlines "flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean".
"They (AAIB representatives) informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path," Razak said.
"Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth," he added.

Ancient Indians had a sense of history: Romila Thapar
At a conference in 1956 at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, historian Romila Thapar, a student at the time, started thinking about one of the key questions at the event: did ancient Indians have a sense of history?
“A decade later, I realised that this was actually irrelevant. Even in ancient times in India, records were kept and reference made to some past events, which were believed to have happened,” she explained.
her book says : “We have to search for how the past saw its past as a parallel study to see how we see the past”

NATION UNDER RED ALERT, CIA ON WORK.
India is turning out to be a dangerous place to work for nuclear scientists. Over the last few years, a number of scientists have died in mysterious circumstances, only to have their deaths classified by the police as unexplained or suicides.
The latest incident took place in October, when the bodies of two senior engineers (one of whom was working at INS Arihant, India's first nuclear-powered submarine) were found on railway tracks near Viskhapatnam by railway workers. The police decided it was a routine accident and chose not to investigate despite the family members of the two engineers saying there were no visible injury marks on the bodies when they were found.
A story on the Vice website recounts other similar incidents and points out that this has been a disconcerting trend in India and that neither the government or the media seem concerned by these incidents.
"If the deaths of those in the community aren't classed as suicide, they're generally labeled as unexplained." A good example is the case of M Iyer, who was found with internal haemorrhaging to his skull-possibly the result of a "kinky experiment," according to a police officer. After a preliminary look-in, the police couldn't work out how Iyer had suffered internal injuries while not displaying any cuts or bruises, and investigations fizzled out."

"Parliament down the ages"
PIc : Jawaharlal Nehru delivering the historic "tryst with destiny"
Our Parliament, often in the news these days for pepper spray and pandemonium, has seen better, much better days. Like when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his historic “Tryst with destiny” speech. The nation remained awake at midnight to listen to the peerless orator. Or when the unassuming Babu Rajendra Prasad often arrived in a majestic horse carriage for the sessions! The nation was free, the dreams were all ours. Not all of them have fructified though, as evidenced by the great popularity of Arvind Kejriwal and his promise of sweeping changes. The jhadoo may or may not be the panacea for the ills afflicting our political system but, our Parliament, right from the days of inception after the Capital of India was shifted to New Delhi in 1911 to now, has rarely known peaceful days, replete with camaraderie.

"HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY"
I DON'T SUPPOSE INDIA TO BE AN INDEPENDENT NATION . BUT ITS ACT TOWARDS THIS REPUBLIC DAY WAS QUITE AWESOME . just go with this info behind 26 January friends .
India achieved independence from British rule on 15 August 1947 following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress. The independence came through the Indian Independence Act 1947 (10 & 11 Geo 6 c. 30), an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that partitioned British India into the two new independent Dominions of the British Commonwealth (later Commonwealth of Nations): India and Pakistan.[3] India obtained its independence on 15 August 1947 as a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as governor-general. The country, though, did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935. On 28 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, with Dr.B. R. Ambedkar as chairman. While India's Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates the coming into force of its constitution.
A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on 4 November 1947.[4] The Assembly met, in sessions open to public, for 166 days, spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days before adopting the Constitution. After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and English) on 24 January 1950. Two days later, it came into effect throughout the nation.
